Role summary
- The Bursar is the Chief Financial Officer of the University and reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor on day-to-day administration and control of the University finances.
Duties listed in the notice include:
- Advising the Vice-Chancellor on finance-related matters
- Coordinating the development and update of the University’s financial management plans
- Coordinating periodic income and expenditure statements, balance sheet, cash flow estimates, and consolidation (when necessary)
- Ensuring accurate records of all University assets and liabilities
- Monitoring monthly income and expenditure, and balance sheet variances against budgets; ensuring reconciliation
- Monitoring treasury activities, including cash flow projections and forecasts, for prudence and accountability
- Negotiating with financial and government bodies on finance matters
- Coordinating the Bursary Department for proper management of University finances
Eligibility and requirements
An applicant for Bursar must have:
- A good honours degree (minimum Second Class Lower) in Accounting, Finance, or related disciplines, from a recognised University
- At least fifteen (15) years relevant post-qualification experience in a University
- A higher qualification is listed as an added advantage.
Professional membership and qualifications:
- Must be a member of ICAN or ANAN
- Must possess any of these recognised accountancy qualifications: ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA, or equivalent
- Fellowship of the listed qualifications is an added advantage
The candidate is also expected to:
- Not be below the rank of Deputy Bursar (or equivalent), and must have spent at least three (3) years on that post
- Be proficient with relevant accounting software and ICT
- Show evidence of strong management and leadership drive in previous positions; and have solid communication and interpersonal skills
- Lead a team by example, with clear mentorship skills and plans; and not be older than sixty (60) years at the time of appointment
- Show competence, responsiveness, integrity, and transparency on financial resource management, with strong management-level experience
- Show leadership qualities that inspire colleagues; have a clear vision for financial management of the University; and be ready to carry out the vision and strategic goals of the University
- Be focused, creative, and computer-literate
- Be in excellent physical and mental health
