Role Mission:
- To ensure that the greenhouse seedling production and other activities are conducted and managed with an eye for efficiency, quality, consistency and a business approach.
Role Goals:
- Manage day to day operations of the greenhouse (GH)
- Ensure timely and efficient seeding of the required quantity of tomato seedling for all TJ fields for the season
- Ensure the continued utilization of all the GHs by planting tomatoes and other choice vegetables at all periods outside seeding times
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain proper environmental conditions required for the growth of plants (seedlings) used in TJ fields, research and instructional programs.
- Inspects greenhouse plants for diseases and insects and supervises and/or carry out the application of sprays and chemicals to combat grass, weeds, insects, and diseases.
- Work with the Farm Operations Manager to determine types and quantities of vegetable plants to be grown, based on budgets, projected sales volumes, or executive directives.
- Make the GH a revenue generating unit of the Nucleus Farm by strategically planning and growing vegetable crops that are marketable and in demand during the off-seeding seasons.
- Maintain inventory records of all items of the GH and those signed out from the warehouse for use.
- Give a comprehensive report of all inputs, labor cost, stand counts, quantity of seeded trays and trays distributed to the NF, MF and the OG after every seeding operation for the season to the Farm Operations Manager
- Direct the repair and preventative maintenance of the greenhouse, its auxiliary facilities and equipment.
- Set up all the drip irrigation system needs within and around the GH
- Oversee and be practically involved in all procedures involving, planting, irrigation, pruning, weeding, fumigating, insect and disease control (IPM), fertilizing, and anything else involved in the GH, as well as the plants around the GH and HQ area.
- Maintain data and records for harvesting, IPM, fertilizer, irrigation, and any other information needed.
- Perform any other duty as may be assigned by your line manager or the executive management
Minimum Qualification and Experience
- Should be a graduate of Agricultural Science, Agricultural Extension, Biology, Agronomy, Agricultural Economics, Horticulture, Crop Production or any other related discipline.
- Minimum of 4-year farming-related work experience in the Green House. Experience in tomato production is required.
- Ability to build a team, share knowledge and experience with peers and play a leadership role within a team.
- Ability to quickly learn and adapt to complex, evolving work conditions and environments.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Fluent in English and Hausa Languages.
