Role overview 

  • The Managing Director (MD) will lead a New company’s strategic direction and day-to-day operations, driving growth, profitability, risk management, and regulatory compliance. 
  • Reports to the Board of Directors and Shareholders, guides and operates in all company’s fields like Product, Risk, Finance, Collection, Sales, Marketing, IT and Customer Service teams. 

Key responsibilities 

  • Strategy and leadership 
  • Define and execute Company’s market strategy to achieve revenue, profitability, and market share targets. 
  • Establish and monitor KPIs across customer acquisition, activation, repayment, delinquency, and customer lifetime value. 
  • Regulatory and risk management 
  • Ensure full compliance with Nigerian regulators and consumer protection standards. 
  • Establish and oversee credit risk, fraud prevention, AML/CFT controls, and responsible lending practices. 

Operations and delivery 

  • Oversee origination, underwriting, collections, customer support, and dispute resolution. 
  • Drive scalable, tech-enabled processes (onboarding, credit scoring, loan servicing) for efficiency. 

Finance and performance 

  • Manage budgeting, forecasting, treasury, and financial reporting. 
  • Lead cost discipline and sustainable growth while maintaining strong risk controls. 

People and culture 

  • Build a high-performing local team; cultivate a customer-centric, compliant, and innovative culture. 
  • Partner with HR, Legal, and Compliance to embed governance and ethical practices. 

Partnerships and stakeholder management 

  • Build and maintain relationships with regulators, banks, fintech vendors. 
  • Represent Company in industry forums, associations, and investor discussions. 
  • Technology and product alignment 
  • Align product, engineering, data science, and risk teams to deliver scalable lending solutions. 
  • Champion responsible AI/ML usage for credit scoring and decisioning, ensuring transparency and fairness. 

Required qualifications and experience 

  • Elite leadership experience at C-suite or senior executive level in fintech, digital lending, or consumer finance within Nigeria. 
  • Proven success in building, scaling, or turning around high-volume digital lending platforms. 
  • Deep understanding of Nigeria’s regulatory landscape for digital lending, data privacy, AML/CFT, and consumer protection. 
  • Financial and operational acumen with P&L ownership, budgeting, forecasting, capital planning, and performance analytics. 
  • Risk management expertise in underwriting, collections, fraud prevention, and regulatory compliance. 
  • Exceptional stakeholder management, negotiation, and communication skills with regulators, partners, and customers. 
  • Tech-savvy with ability to collaborate with product, data, and engineering teams; familiarity with credit scoring models and fintech tech stacks is a plus. 
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; MBA, CFA, or equivalent advanced degree preferred. 

Nice-to-have 

  • Experience with mobile-first lending, BNPL, or micro-lending in emerging markets. 
  • Knowledge of Nigerian payment rails, digital wallets, and the fintech ecosystem. 
  • Demonstrated impact on financial inclusion initiatives and responsible lending campaigns. 
  • Strong local network within the Nigerian fintech, banking, and regulatory communities. 

Key metrics 

  • Revenue growth, profitability, loan book size, repayment performance, and delinquency rate. 
  • Customer acquisition cost (CAC), customer lifetime value (LTV), and portfolio quality. 
  • Origination speed, underwriting quality, repayment automation, and cross-sell success. 
  • Compliance incidents, fraud rate, customer satisfaction (NPS/CSS). 
  • Talent development, retention, and leadership effectiveness.
