Job Description

Job Summary 

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Phlebotomist to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for collecting blood and other specimens from patients efficiently, safely, and accurately. The candidate will ensure proper labeling, handling, and transport of specimens while maintaining high standards of patient care and safety. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Collect blood and other specimens from patients using proper techniques. 
  • Ensure correct labeling and documentation of all specimens collected. 
  • Prepare specimens for analysis and transport to the laboratory in accordance with safety and quality standards.
  • Monitor patient comfort and safety during sample collection. 
  • Maintain cleanliness and proper sterilization of equipment. 
  • Adhere strictly to infection control, safety, and laboratory protocols. 
  • Collaborate with medical and laboratory staff to ensure accurate and timely processing of specimens. 
  • Educate patients on procedures and answer any questions to reduce anxiety. 
  • Maintain accurate records of collections and prepare reports as required. 
  • Participate in continuous professional development and training programs. 

Educational & Professional Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, or related field. 
  • Completion of a one (1) year internship in a recognized healthcare facility. 
  • Registration with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) or equivalent regulatory body. 
  • Valid practicing license. 
  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience in clinical specimen collection and handling. 

Required Skills & Competencies 

  • Proficiency in venipuncture and other specimen collection techniques. 
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control protocols. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in labelling and documentation. 
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced healthcare environment. 
  • Professionalism, empathy, and patient care orientation. 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with medical and laboratory staff.
